Published: 13 Jan 2026

In computers, orientation refers to the direction or layout in which content is displayed on the screen or printed on paper. It mainly describes how a page or screen is positioned, vertically or horizontally.

Two Types of Orientation

  • Portrait Orientation: Vertical layout (height is more than width)
  • Landscape Orientation: Horizontal layout (width is more than height)

Examples:

Here, I am going to show some examples of how and where they are used for better understanding.

1. Screen Orientation

Orientation is also used for screen display, especially on mobiles, tablets, and laptops.

  • Portrait mode: Used for reading, mobile apps
  • Landscape mode: Used for videos, games, and presentations

Example: Rotating a mobile screen.

2. Orientation in Printing

Orientation decides how a document will be printed on paper.

  • Portrait for letters and assignments
  • Landscape for charts, tables, and wide images

3. Orientation in Software

Many programs allow changing orientation:

  • MS Word / Excel: Page orientation
  • PowerPoint: Slide orientation
  • Graphic design software: Canvas orientation
